13 Empowering Stories of Women in Family Farming

Women account for 60 to 80% of smallholder farmers in the developing world. Yet in sub-Saharan Africa, only 15% of landholders are women, and they receive less than 10% of credit and 7% of extension services. Policies that address gender inequalities could lift 150 million people out of hunger. How can women be empowered to make this estimation a reality?

Family Farming: Regional Perspective on Africa

Francesco Pierri, Family Farming Officer at FAO, explains the importance of small scale and family farming in the region. The International Year of Family Farming (IYFF) was launched as part of a global campaign to reinforce awareness and support for small scale and family farmers around the world. According to FAO, the contributions of these important agricultural producers is critical to the fight against hunger and malnutrition. Both in developing and developed countries, family farming is the predominant form of agriculture in the food production sector. (Interview produced by Sandra Ferrari).

L'agriculture familiale et médias communautaires

Dans le cadre de l'Année internationale de l'agriculture familiale 2014 (AIAF), l'Association Mondiale des Radiodiffuseurs Communautaires (AMARC) et l'Organisation pour les Nations Unies pour l'alimentation et l'agrciculture (FAO) ont lancé conjointement une campagne de sensibilisation à l'intention des organisations d'agriculteurs et la population rurale. L'objectif principal est celui d'utiliser la radio communautaire comme une plateforme pour partager des informations avec la communauté agricole et les inviter à prendre partie au dialogue centré sur le rôle clé de l'agriculture familiale dans le cadre du développement économique et social .
